This is because there is no comparison to the sizes of dresses today and those of past decades. If you wear a size 8 dress today, you would probably never think of buying size 12 in this type of dress, but that is exactly the size you need to look at. This is why the stores that sell vintage clothing will advertise the dresses in waist, hip, and bust measurements.
Browsing online will allow you to search numerous sites selling all kinds of vintage clothing. These sites have huge collections of dresses from earlier times. Search for dresses from the Victorian era, from the 20 or the sweetheart styles of the 60. Searching for Affordable Vintage Dresses?
I have an event coming up, and it is in the style of a 1945 USO ball. We've been invited to dress in vintage clothing, in the style of the early to mid 1940's. I am going to go searching at vintage/thrift stores, but am afraid I will not find anything. I only have around 2 weeks before the event, so making a dress from scratch isn't exactly an option. Any ideas of where I could find a 1940's style dress for an affordable price (less than 50 bucks) other than through a thrift store or ebay? (I checked ebay, and none of them were quite what I am looking for...) I am looking for an evening sort of cocktail dress. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks so much:)
You could check a store like forever 21. They always seem to have vintage-y looking dresses.
The only reason I recommend this is because you're looking for an expensive dress, and well, recently prices for dresses like this have skyrocketed.
You could always look at some rockabilly stores (linked) and look at the clearance items. (I know it takes time, but there are some awesome finds in there- and way less annoying then going through the racks at thrift stores).
