Fitted Shirts – What To Look For When Buying A Fitted Shirt
When trying on your fitted dress shirt either in a store or when getting it from your shirt maker there are a few things you should keep an eye out for if you have intentions on picking what can be considered a well fitted shirt.
• Shoulder Width - Find the end of your top shoulder bone and make sure that the shoulder seams align with it. Far too many men are wearing shirts that sag below this point, which in turn affects the look of the shirts on other areas.
• Sleeve Length - When standing with your arms relaxed down along your arms a fitted dress shirt has a sleeve ending at the top thumb knuckle if the cuff is not buttoned.
• Waist - Often standard sizes have a tent like affect along the waist of the dress shirt. To achieve a normal fit try sitting down with the shirt on and make sure that the waist fabric cannot extend more than a fist size from your stomach. For a slim fit it should be about half a fist size.
• Shirt Length - For the shirt length you should consider if you are looking for a shirt that is to be tucked in or remain out of your pants. For tucked in dress shirts the shirt should end about ½ inch above the end of your pants zipper. For un-tucked dress shirts it should end about 1 ½ inches above that same spot. This is a subjective matter, however.
There are generally three options when it comes to dress shirts:
- Athletic fitted shirts - Fits for this type of build are usually called athletic, slim, or modern fit. These fits come with a narrower waist, chest, and hip area.
- Standard sized dress shirts – These sizes are a bit larger and looser which doesn’t allow for much of a fitted look. Usually these shirts result in a sloppier and baggier look.
- Custom made fitted shirts - By getting a custom fitted shirt you get a shirt that follows your specific dimensions and you’ll have complete control over the final fit of the shirt. Nine times out of ten the fit is better with the fully customizable shirt.
For those who want a clean cut look, then wearing a fitted shirt is the only option. A cleaner cut will lead to a more presentable look and more appealing to everyone. Be careful when buying standard shirt sizes or pre-made shirt sizes though, sizes vary from store to store and often times you won’t be able to get the same look as you can with a custom or tailor made fitted dress shirt. The best choice is to go to a tailor and get a custom made dress shirt. A tailor will be able to measure your upper body and provide the best fitting shirt you’ll ever have. There are even several online options that provide detailed information on how to measure your own body so you’ll have complete control over the fit of the shirt.

Questions & Answers about Sleeve Shirt Size
How do I determine a men's dress shirt size without tags?
I have a brand-new men's dress shirt but the tags are cut out. (Got it at a yard sale for 25 cents!). How do I determine the neck and sleeve size so I can give it to one of my brothers?
Thanks!
this is measurement size
M size chest is 20"
L size chest is 21"
XL size chest is 22"
thanks,
or you can check it out at my store http://onetwostyle.com
Can cleaners alter my short sleeve shirt to make short sleeves adjustable to arm size? (pic & idea included)?
http://www.altrec.com/images/shop/detail/swatches/OAK/1811.52843_e.jpg
I just bought shirt and the sleeves are snug around my biceps (upper arm). (serious question....not to be boasting), but I know my arms will be too big to in the sleeves because they barely fit now.
I'm thinking about taking shirt to the cleaners and having them cut a slit along the sleeve on the inside. It would be in the inside of my arm so it's not noticeable to others. Then I would have them sew something like velcrow or a button strap thingy (something creative) that will allow me to loosen up the sleeve and make it adjustable.
If there is enough material in the seam, which would be located in the underarm area, they may be able to take it out and adjust to your bicep. It depends on how much you need to have the shirt let out.
I would suggest to leave the tags on & bring it to the cleaners and see what they can do. If not, then return it. But, many times the cleaners are the most economical way to get things altered and they tend to do an amazing job!!
Good Luck!!
